"We envisioned a parade of 'legs' through history marching toward the present moment," shared artist Shanna Coulter, who plans to complete the painting with a team of artists. "The mural would begin with the Native Americans who were here when the county first began to attract settlers, through the 'Gold Rush', the 'poultry capital of the world', the Great Fire, Denim Day, the Civil Rights Movement and the integration of schools, to the colorful fashion of the mid-to-late 1900s, reflecting the vibrant spirit of our community, much like the ceramics and pottery that tell our stories through portraits of the past."

When Main Street Canton and the City of Canton put out a call for artist concepts to create a Railroad Street mural in early 2020, a group of Cherokee County art teachers, including ceramics and pottery educators, couldn’t resist using the call as an opportunity to teach.
